I was wondering if there ever was a vertical milling attachment for a horizontal mill? It would seem that it would be a somewhat useful attachment. It could slide on the over arm ways and either be powered by the horizontal spindle or be self contained with its own motor. My horizontal mill is not accurate enough I think as pertains to the table movement to be of much real use.
What you want is a small vertical turret mill, also known as a Bridgeport type. With what you are making you will be drilling,boring, milling, flycutting, ect. Horizontal attachments also available. Universal mills where I come from are horizontal mills with a swiveling table. In a tool and die shop they have specific valuable functions.

It mounts over the dovetail underneath Bridgy type rams(not the old round ones). There is no dovetail on Excello mills as far as I know,so they don't work there.
